22.5 years is a slap on the wrist and a slap across all our faces . #WeLoveYouGeorge

Before It's Gone //Take It Back June 26, 2021

Equality for Flatbush (E4F) sends our love and solidarity to the family of #GeorgeFloyd and everyone who has been impacted by police murder and violence. We understand that no amount of jail time can bring George back to his family and heal the tremendous pain they have endured over the last year. There is also absolutely no amount of jail time that could ever soothe the historical trauma of centuries of gendocial state violence , we have experienced as Black, Indigenous and Brown peoples.

What we do know is that, if a Black man like George Floyd had killed #DerekChavin or any white person in the same sadistic and brutal fashion, the state would of sought the death penalty or life in prison. There would be no talk of leniency or the lack of a criminal record. We know for a fact that innocent Black, Indigenous and Brown peoples are FRAMED by cops and judges every single day and left to languish in prisons forever for crimes they did not commit . We know for a fact that people of color are given outrageously long sentences for non-violence survival related “crimes” on a daily basis. It is also a statistical fact, that women of color are sent to prison for non-violent drug and property offenses at a higher rate than men and overwhelmly the police murders of Black women never even make it to trial.

For all these reasons, we believe as abolitionists that there is absolutely nothing wrong with families, activists and communities calling for jail time for racist killer cops who murder our loved ones. We respect the self-determination of people who use the criminal injustice system to hold law enforcement accountable for it’s murderous treachery. As abolitionists, we call for the defunding of police departments across the country and demand that the money be spent to provide desperately needed healthcare, jobs, affordable housing, education, social services, etc. While we are fighting to have the police, ICE and prisons abolished in the US, we see absolutely nothing wrong with predatory landlords, developers, CEOs, politicians, white supremacists or cops being held accountable for all their crimes against humanity. Until we as people of color, women, QTPOC/LGBTQ+, young people, elders and all oppressed people, get real justice for the hundreds of years of systemic oppression and relentless violence we have endured under this capitalist system, 22.5 years for the murder of George Floyd is a slap on the wrist and across all our faces. We salute and thank the Floyd family and all of the families directly impacted by police murders for their courage, strength and leadership, as they fight for justice for our entire movement .
